Egmore

Egmore [ eɡmo ː r] or Ezhumbur (Tamil: எழும்பூர் Eḻumpūr [ jeɻɯmbu ː r] ) is a district of Chennai (Madras ), the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Egmore is located in the center of Chennai, and in addition to the Chennai Egmore railway station, a number of buildings from the British colonial period as the Government Museum, and St. Andrew 's Church.

Location

Egmore is located in the center of Chennai, on the north bank of the Cooum River. The boundaries of the neighborhood are not exactly defined, Egmore can, however, against the districts Chetput in the West, Kilpauk in the northwest and the north Purasawalkam delimit. History

Egmore existed before the founding of Chennai. Two inscriptions in the Parthasarathy Temple, one was from 1309 and one from the 16th century mention a village called Ezhumur, the chief town of a county. The name changed later in Ezhumbur and was anglicised during the colonial period in Egmore.

After the British East India Company had founded in 1640 the Fort St. George, which was to become the nucleus of the city of Madras (Chennai ), she acquired in 1694 the nearby village Egmore. But Egmore retained a rural character and long experienced in the second half of the 19th century, greater growth.
