Eiji Yoshikawa

Eiji Yoshikawa (Japanese吉川 英 治, actually Yoshikawa Hidetsugu (吉川 英 次), born August 11, 1892 in Kanagawa Prefecture, † September 7, 1962 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese writer, known in the West, especially through his work Musashi been. The novel was filmed in 1954 (Eng. title: Samurai )

The novel describes the period in Japanese Taiko unification, ending with the Battle of Sekigahara shown by Musashi at the beginning.

He is one of the most widely read writers in Japan. For the novel Shin Heike Monogatari, he received the Kikuchi Kan Prize. In 1955 he was awarded the Asahi Prize in 1960 with the Japanese Order of Culture, and in 1961 with the Mainichi Art Award. 1967 founded the publishing house Kodansha the Yoshikawa Eiji Literature Prize - (吉川英 治 文学 赏, Yoshikawa Eiji Bungakushō ) and 1980 the Yoshikawa Eiji - Young Investigator Award for Literature (吉川英 治 文学 新人 赏, Yoshikawa Eiji Bungaku Shinjinshō ) in his honor.
