Since 1915 the local club Sporting Gijon uses the stadium as the venue for their home games.

The greatest success of this association was a second place in the Spanish championship of 1978 / 79th Currently plays Sporting in La Liga, the top division in Spain, where it has currently established in the back of the midfield. The only title of the Association was in the Segunda División five championships.

The Estadio Municipal El Molinón was one of the venues for the FIFA World Cup 1982, which organized Spain. At that time, the stadium could accommodate 45,000 spectators. Currently, the capacity is 29 538 spectator seats after they had made in the 2009/10 season a small renovation and doing some spaces added before the 25,000 -seater stadium. At the World Cup were two memorable games held in Gijón. Firstly, the two-time world champion at the time, Germany was defeated in the first round of Algeria 2-1.

However, much more famous is the third game in this World Cup in El Molinón where Germany and Austria faced the final group game. Having previously Algeria Chile had defeated two handed a narrow victory of the Germans to progress. What followed was a non-aggression pact of Gijon in the history of the World Cup one, because after an early goal for Germany by Horst Hrubesch presented both teams the game completely and just pushed the ball is still on. Since this game and the obvious manipulation of the final group games at World Cup tournaments are regularly held at the same time.
