Eleanor's birth date is unknown. On February 6, 1221 she was married in Ágreda with the then only thirteen years old King James I of Aragon. This marriage was largely mediated by her older sister Berenguela and demanded by the Aragonese - Catalan Great, who wanted to see married as early as possible their king, so that this very early, many children could testify, so as to prevent an imminent throne vacancy in the event of his possible early death. Probably in the first days of 1228 the Infante Alfonso was born, who was diagnosed in February of the same year for the sole heirs of the countries conglomerate of the Crown of Aragon.

However, the marriage called the displeasure of Pope Gregory IX. forth, as Eleanor and James I were related as second cousins according to canon law too closely; King Alfonso VII of Castile was their common great-grandfather. In February 1229, the pope instructed his legate in Spain, John of Abbeville, with the implementation of the declaration of nullity of marriage. On April 29, 1229 legate convened a council of the Aragonese clergy ' and nobility in Tarragona in order to preach the refusal of a papal dispensation and thus the annulment of the marriage. However, the divorce did not affect the legitimacy of the Infante Alfonso, which was recognized by papal side. Eleanor returned to her divorce to Castile and entered there in the Cistercian Abbey of Santa María la Real of Las Huelgas, where she died the last of the many children of their parents in 1244 and was buried.
