Eleanor V. E. Sharpston

Sharpston QC ( born 1955 ) is a British lawyer. Since 2006 she is the Advocate General at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.

Life

Sharpston grew up in Brazil and continental Europe and studied from 1973 to 1977 economics, languages ​​and law at King's College, University of Cambridge. In 1977 she went to Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford, where she conducted research in an interdisciplinary and 1980 in the area of ​​economic and law and taught. In 1980 she was admitted to the Bar of the Middle Temple as a Barrister and practiced in this capacity from 1980 to 1987 in Brussels from 1990 to 2005 in London. In the meantime, she was 1987-1990 Legal Secretary Gordon Slynn, Baron Slynn of Hadley, who worked first as Advocate General and in 1988 as a judge at the European Court of Justice.

Besides remained Sharpston also an academic career connected. So she taught from 1990 to 1992 as a lecturer in European and Comparative Law at University College London and from 1992 to 2005 at the University of Cambridge. She is since 1992 a Fellow of King's College from 1998 to 2005 and was a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for European Legal Studies, University of Cambridge. Sharpston is a member of the Bar Associations of Ireland and Gibraltar.

Since 11 January 2006 she has held the office of the Advocate General at the European Court.
