Elizabeth of Carinthia, Queen of Germany

Elisabeth of Carinthia, Gorizia and Tyrol (* around 1262 in Munich, † October 28, 1313 in Vienna) was by marriage Duchess of Austria and Styria from 1299 and elected Roman- German queen.

Life

Elizabeth was the second daughter of the Duke Meinhard II of Carinthia, Gorizia and Tyrol, of the race of Meinhardiner and his wife Elisabeth of Bavaria, the oldest daughter of Duke Otto II of the house of Wittelsbach.

1276 she married in Vienna Duke Albrecht von Habsburg ( 1255-1308 ), the son of the Roman-German King Rudolf I and his first wife Gertrude of Hohenberg. Elizabeth was a clever and enterprising woman who possessed certain commercial talents. The construction of the salt production site in the Salzkammergut region goes back to her suggestion. In 1299 she was crowned in Nuremberg Roman-German queen.

On May 1, 1308 Elizabeth's husband at Brugg on the River Aare by his nephew Johann Parricida ( 1290-1313 ) was murdered because John found himself deceived because of the non-fulfillment of demands from the Rheinfelder House Rules by Albrecht. Queen Elizabeth was at the point where Albrecht was killed, the monastery Königsfelden build, where she was also buried later. About St. Blaise their bones came later to the monastery of St. Paul in the Lavant valley in Carinthia, where they were buried in the abbey church.
