Elmar Magerramov

Elmar Məhərrəmov ( born April 10, 1958 in Baku, often written Elmar Magerramov ) is an Azerbaijani chess player. Məhərrəmov 1981 International Master and Grandmaster since 1992. He is a chess coach of the club Dubai Chess Club in the United Arab Emirates.

Life

His father was a doctor, his mother a chemist. At the age of 14 he learned to play chess at the Pioneer Palace in Baku. There he met five years younger Garry Kasparov, with whom he analyzed much in the following years. They played 1975-1982 several informal competitions under tournament conditions to train certain openings. Overall, his record against Kasparov is four wins, seven draws and eight defeats. During his mathematics studies at the University, he worked with Vladimir Bagirov, subsequently, he opted for a career as a professional chess player. In 1986, he finished in a Grandmaster tournament in Baku 2nd place behind Mikhail Gurevich. In the same year he was part of the secondary Dante team Kasparov at the World Championship match against Karpov.

In 1990, he won an International Open in Andorra. In 1991, he was in Moscow at the last Soviet Individual Championship tied second behind the winner Artashes Minassjan, against whom he lost in the tiebreak. In 1993, he won on points ahead of Bernd Kohlweyer the Chess Festival Bad Wörishofen, the same year he was Sekundant Nana Iosseliani at the Women's World Cup. In 1994, he was able to repeat his victory in Bad Wörishofen, this time in front of Julian Hodgson. After that he settled down in Dubai, where he works as a chess trainer. His students included the first Grand Master of the country, Taleb Moussa. 2005 and 2006 with lead and split in 2007 he won the Dubai Open Championship of the United Arab Emirates.

His current Elo rating is 2511 (as of January 2010), so it is on the 13th place of the Azerbaijani Elo ranking. His previous highest Elo rating in the world chess federation FIDE was 2580 in July 1994.

He is married and has two sons.
