Ely Ould Mohamed Vall

Ely Ould Mohamed Vall (Arabic إعلي ولد محمد فال, DMG I ʿ lī walad Muḥammad FAL; born 1953 ) was Chairman of the Military Council for Justice and democracy, after the military coup of 3 August 2005 ruling in Mauritania junta of 16 officers and thus Head of State of the country. Its official address was Colonel Ely Ould Mohamed Vall, Président du Conseil Militaire pour la Justice et la Démocratie, chef de l'Etat. (French: " Colonel Ely Ould Mohamed Vall, Chairman of the Military Council for Justice and Democracy, Head of State ").

Vall comes from a family of the Muslim elite of the country. He received military training in neighboring Morocco and was a long time in the north of Mauritania in the fight against the Polisario Front independence warriors of the former Spanish colony of Spanish Sahara in use. He held before the coup, the influential post of security chiefs in the country ( since 1987) and has long been considered a close confidant of President Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya, whom he had assisted in the coup d'etat in 1984. His revolution which was welcomed in Mauritania, but found little support in the international world ( the predecessor regime was considered reliable partisans of the United States, and was recognized as one of only a few countries in the Arab world, Israel). So Mauritania membership in the African Union was lifted for the time being. During his reign, he carried out a constitutional reform, which aimed at a democratic direction of the country. Likewise, he managed to stabilize the economy of his home country, which is one with the poorest world through reforms and encourage. Also, an attempt was made to bring about a degree of independence of the judiciary.

As promised by him, found on March 11, 2007, the first free presidential election since independence Mauritania place, the military junta put themselves no candidate. On 10 April 2007 Mauritania suspension of the African Union was lifted. On 19 April 2007 he handed over the presidency to Cheikh Abdallahi Ould Sidi Mohamed.
