The Emory S. Land - class is a class of submarine tenders of the United States Navy.

History

The Emory S. Land - class is a slight variation on the previous L. Y. Spear class. The USS Emory S. Land (AS -39) was given as the first ship of the class together with the second in 1974 in order, then the last unit in 1977. A original planned fourth ship of the class was not built. Planning Shipyard Norfolk Naval Shipyard was the, were built all three tenders from the Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company. The cost was 130 million U.S. dollars per ship from the budgets in 1972 and 1973 for the first two units. The fourth unit had 1977 already cost $ 260 million ..

The ships were commissioned between 1979 and 1981. 1999 was the first of the three ships, AS- 41, decommissioned. 2007 AS -39 was withdrawn from the Mediterranean and stationed at the U.S. Pacific coast, AS-40 is located in Apra Harbor, Guam.

Technology

The ships of the class are 197.8 meters long and 25.9 meters wide. They displace about 23,000 tons. They have been specially designed for being able to supply the submarines of the Los Angeles-class. Each tender can simultaneously take four submarines alongside and supply them with food and weapons. But the ships have three cranes, a boom can be supplied on each side in a calm harbor water and a third boat. The hull ships have 13 decks.

The drive consists of two boilers with attached gear turbine, which act together on a propeller. The performance of the system is 20,000 shaft horsepower, the tender can reach speeds of around 20 knots.

The armament is limited to 20 - and 40 -mm anti-aircraft guns, as radar is a AN/SPS-55 of Raytheon on board.
