Emory is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ), and the largest city in Rains County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city lies at the intersection of U.S. Highway 69 to Highway 19 in the center of the county in northeastern Texas, is located in the north about 90 miles from Oklahoma and has a total area of 4.0 km ² without significant water surface.

History

Was named the place after Emory Rains, an early settler in the area.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,021 people in 410 households and 261 families. The population density was 254.3 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 90.50 % White, 5.48 % African American, 0.39 % Native American, 0.29 % Asian, 0.39 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 1.86 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.08% were Mixed Race and 2.94 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 410 households 32.4 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.9 % were married couples living together. 17.1% were single mothers and 36.3 % were non-families. 33.4 % of all households were single-person households, and 21.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size amounted to 2.93.

25.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2 % from 18 to 24, 26.2% 25-44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.6 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 82.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 76.2 males.

The median income for a household was $ 30,119, and the median income for a family $ 34,375. Males had a median income of $ 31,685 versus $ 18,393 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,107. 13.7 % of the population and 10.5 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 10.2 % have children under the age of 18 and 21.7 % of those 65 or older.
