Eric Hanushek

Eric Alan Hanushek ( May 22nd, 1943 in Lakewood, Ohio) is an American economist. He is an expert in the economics of education and a Fellow at the Hoover Institution.

Life

Hanushek concluded in 1965 his B. S. at the United States Air Force Academy with honors. His Ph.D. in economics, he received in 1968 from MIT. From 1965 to 1974 he served in the United States Air Force. He taught at the University of Rochester, Yale University and the U.S. Air Force Academy. For the Government, he worked deputy director of the Congressional Budget Office, as a consultant in the Council of Economic Advisers and as an economist for the Cost of Living Council. He has served on government committees on education in California and Texas. He is a member of the National Academy of Education and the International Academy of Education and is also a Fellow of the Society of Labor Economists and the American Education Research Association.

Hanushek is on the committee of the Texas Schools Project at the University of Texas at Dallas, a researcher at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a member of the Koret Task Force on K- 12th He is in the Equity and Excellence Commission of the Ministry of Education of the United States from 2008 to 2010 and was chairman of the National Board for Education Sciences. He is currently Coordinator of Education at the Center for Economic Studies of Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich.

Work

Hanushek has emerged as a leading researcher in the economic analysis of education. His work on efficiency, resource utilization and economic impact of schools has affected the U.S. and international education policy. His research interests include various topics such as the impact of teacher quality, standardized tests and class size on the learning progress, and the role of cognitive skills in economic growth and development. His pioneering end analysis for measuring teacher quality based on the learning progress of students is the basis of many studies on the evaluation of teachers and schools.
