Eriobotrya deflexa is a species of the genus of loquats ( Eriobotrya ). It originates from East Asia. Occasionally, they are used in subtropical regions as an ornamental wood.

Description

Appearance and leaf

Eriobotrya deflexa grows as a small evergreen tree which grows to a height of 5 to 12 meters. The bark of young branches is densely brown hairy, the hair is lost in the course of time. The crowded at the end of the branches standing, change-constant leaves have a 2 to 40 centimeters long, bare petiole. The leathery, simple leaf blade is oblong to lanceolate with a width of 3 to 7 centimeters and a length of 10 to 19 centimeters above the center of it is the widest. The leaf base is running a wedge-shaped, the blade tip is pulled short, the leaf margin is notched irregularly. The upper leaf surface is glossy hand, both sides are hairy first, but then soon bald. The midrib is raised on both leaf surfaces and there are ten to twelve pairs of lateral nerves present. The stipules fall off early.

Inflorescence and flower

The flowering period extends from May to June. The 6 to 12 millimeters long inflorescence stem is densely woolly brown hairy. Rispige the inflorescence has a diameter of 6 to 8 cm and containing many flowers. The lower side woolly hairy bracts are lanceolate with a length of 4 to 6 mm. The 6-12 mm long pedicel is dense woolly brown hairy.

The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and fünfzählig double perianth, with a diameter of 1.5 to 1.8 centimeters. The cup- shaped flowers cup ( hypanthium ) is outside hairy woolly brown. The five outside woolly brown haired and bare inside sepals are slightly shorter than the flower cups and triangular- ovate with an obtuse or acute upper end at a length of about 1.2 cm. The five free, white petals are circular or obovate, with a length of about 8 mm and a width of about 7 millimeters. There are twenty stamens present. The three-to fünfkammerige ovary is bald. Each ovary chamber contains two ovules. The three to five pens are fused at their base and hairy fluffy.

Fruit and seeds

The 7 to 12 mm long fruit stalk is fluffy brown hair. The case of a diameter from 1.2 to 2 centimeters, almost spherical apple fruits turn yellowish red at maturity from June to August. On the fruit are back curved sepals. The seeds are large.

Occurrence

Eriobotrya deflexa occurs in the Chinese provinces of Guangdong and Hainan, Taiwan, and Vietnam. They inhabited altitudes 1000-2100 meters. It grows on slopes in evergreen broadleaf forests of the valleys.

Use

Eriobotrya deflexa can be grown as an ornamental tree in subtropical regions. It is suitable as a street tree or as a small tree house and can be planted in sunny to partially shaded situations. It is equipped with a life span of 20 to 30 years rather short life expectancy. Eriobotrya deflexa can be infected by fire blight.
