Ernst Gotthelf Gersdorf

Ernst Gotthelf Gersdorf ( Ernst Gotthelf Gersdorf, Karl Gotthelf ) ( born November 2, 1804 in Tautendorf; † January 5, 1874 in Leipzig) was a librarian at the University Library of Leipzig.

His father was a clergyman, who was a spiritual inspector and Lokaladjunkt in Monstab at Altenburg. 1820 enrolled Ernst Gotthelf Gersdorf to study theology and philosophy. From 1826, he worked as a secretary at the Royal Public Library in Dresden under the direction of Adolph Friedrich Ebert. In 1833 he became the successor of the philologist Christian Daniel Beck overall management of the University Library in Leipzig. He thus became the first full-time librarian at (then) Germany's third largest library. He published numerous works on Saxon history.

His literary pseudonym was Woldemar Egg.

In addition, he was a member of numerous associations, such as the " Philosophy and History class of the Royal Saxon Society of Sciences " in Leipzig.

He was instrumental in the elucidation of the manuscript theft by Wilhelm Bruno Lindner.
