The Star Dog tooth ( Erythronium tuolumnense ) or Tuolumne Dog tooth is a species in the lily family ( Liliaceae ).

Features

The Star Dog tooth is a perennial, herbaceous plant onion, reaches the heights of growth 15 to 30 centimeters. The leaves are not patched. The 1-5 flowers golden yellow with greenish throat. The stylus 8 to 10 mm long. The scar is undivided or has less than 1 millimeter long rag on.

The flowering period extends from April to May

Occurrence

The star - dog tooth occurs in middle eastern California. The species grows in open woods and shady ravines at altitudes 600-950 meters.

Use

The Star Dog tooth is rarely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens and woodland edges. The species is in cultivation since about 1960. His crops are mostly hybrid varieties with Erythronium revolutum (selection):

  • ' Citronella ' has lemon yellow flowers.
  • ' Pagoda ' is a hardy, perennial plant with bright yellow flowers and a throat with brown ring.
  • ' Jeanine ' and 'Miss Jessop ' have pied foliage.
