Eugen Netto

Eugen Otto Erwin Netto ( * June 30, 1848 in Halle, † May 13 1919 in Gießen ) was a German mathematician who worked on combinatorics and group theory.

Life and work

Netto's father was employed at the Francke'schen Foundations in Halle. Net went to school in Halle and Berlin. From 1866 he studied mathematics at the University of Berlin at Leopold Kronecker, Karl Weierstrass and Ernst Eduard Kummer. He took his degree in 1870 and received his doctorate in Weierstrass. After that, he taught at a school in Berlin, before he was in 1879 associate professor at the University of Strasbourg. In 1882 he became an associate professor in Berlin and in 1888 professor at the University of Giessen. In 1913 he retired.

Net worked among other things on group theory, where he gave a new proof of the Sylow phrases. He is known for early textbooks on combinatorics and group theory.
