Eugene Casserly

Eugene Casserly ( born November 13, 1820 Mullingar, Ireland, † June 14 1883 in San Francisco ) was an American politician (Democratic Party), who represented the state of California in the U.S. Senate.

Born in County Westmeath Eugene Casserly was still an infant when his parents emigrated with him in 1822 in the United States. The family settled in New York; the education of the boy first took over his father. He received his college degree at Georgetown University in Washington. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1844 and commenced practice as a lawyer in New York.

Casserly was subsequently also worked as a journalist. He was editor of the Freeman 's Journal and worked as a writer for numerous other newspapers. From 1846 to 1847 he stood as a litigator ( Corporation Counsel ) in the service of the City of New York, before he moved to San Francisco in 1850, where he edited several newspapers with the Public Balance, True Balance and the standard. In 1851 he was employed as State Printer to the State of California.

After he retired from journalism and worked exclusively as a lawyer for several years, Eugene Casserly was in 1868 elected to the U.S. Senate. He took his seat in Washington on 4 March 1869, laid it down on 29 November 1873. During this time, was one of the Chairmen of the Committee on engrossed bills. After leaving the Senate, he focused again on his law firm. 1878 and 1879 he took part in each case at the Constitutional Convention of California.
