European Parliament election, 2014 (Austria)

The European elections in Austria 2014 will be held on 25 May 2014 under the EU -wide European elections in 2014. In Austria, 18 of the 751 seats of the European Parliament will be awarded.

Initial situation

In the European elections of 2009, the two governing parties SPÖ and ÖVP have suffered losses. The ÖVP was the strongest party. Originally accounted for Austria 17 seats, after the enlargement of the Parliament after the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty in 2011 Austria received two more seats.

In the national election of 2013, the grand coalition was confirmed despite loss of votes. At the same time, two new parties came into Parliament, the team Stronach and NEOS, while the Alliance for Austria's Future missed the re-entry to the National Council.

Suffrage

In the European elections in Austria all persons are entitled to vote who have Austrian citizenship and residence in Austria, Austrian nationals not resident in Austria, as well as non-Austrian EU citizens with main residence in Austria. In addition, voters on election day must complete the age of 16 and be registered on the record date in the electoral register / European electoral register an Austrian municipality at the latest. The passive suffrage have all those people who are themselves eligible to vote and who are at least 18 years of age on election day in the European elections.

There is an explicit electoral threshold of four percent. By using seat allocation according to the d' Hondt method but a profit mandate is safe only after a vote share of 5.27 %.

Nominations

To run for office, campaigning groups must submit the supporting signature of a member of the European Parliament or three members of the National Council or of 2,600 eligible voters.

It is still unclear the commencement of the team Stronach for Austria (TS ), which would include Member of Parliament. Hans -Peter Martin ( list Dr. Martin) declared in March 2014, not again to stand for election.

In addition, the following parties or electoral alliances want to run, what they have to submit 2,600 signatures of support:

  • EU STOP ( coalition of withdrawal from the EU Party and Alliance Neutral Free Austria )
  • The Monarchists - Black - Yellow Alliance ( SGA)

The party Alliance for the Future of Austria and the electoral alliance Europe gather different despite the possibility of using the signature of one of its candidates, the necessary 2,600 signatures.
