Eusebio Sacristán Mena ( born April 13, 1964 in La Seca ), called Eusebio, is a former Spanish footballer and current coach.

Much of his professional career spent the midfielder at Real Valladolid and Barcelona, with whom he won the 1992 European Champion Clubs' Cup. Since 2011, Eusebio is coach of FC Barcelona B.

Eusebio Sacristán moved in 1982 from the youth ranks of Real Valladolid in the first amateur team and a year later in the Erstligakader of professionals. In his first professional season, he reached Valladolid in La Liga a modest 14th place in the table. Contrast, much more successful was winning the Copa de la Liga, the then discharged Spanish League Cup. This was the first major trophy in the club's history of Real Valladolid and also in the career of Sacristán. Thus his team also secured the participation in the UEFA Cup 1984/85, where, however, failed already in the first round in the Croatian representative HNK Rijeka. By 1987, Eusebio Sacristán still played at Valladolid, without achieving this other noteworthy achievements. Then he worked for a season at Atlético Madrid, with whom he reached the third place in the table at the end of the season.

In 1988, the midfielder and his team -mates Julio Salinas to the traditional club FC Barcelona. There should arise under new coach Johan Cruyff a dream team, which drove into the following years numerous titles. At this squad were adjacent said Salinas, among other things Andoni Zubizarreta, Jose Ramon Alexanko, Guillermo Amor, Gary Lineker or Txiki Begiristain. So Sacristán celebrated in his first season with Barcelona winning the European Cup Winners' Cup 1988/89. In the championship, the team reached the runner-up behind the arch-rivals Real Madrid. The following season, the team deteriorated while a table space and failed in the second round of the European Cup Winners' Cup at RSC Anderlecht, but this time Barcelona won the Copa del Rey, Spain's national cup competition. And the team of Sacristán was constantly reinforced by new stars like Michael Laudrup, Ronald Koeman or Christo Stoichkov. In the 1990/91 season the midfielder reached with his team finally the awaited championship. In the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup they narrowly failed to Manchester United. In the following three years, Barcelona became champion and also won the European Champions Cup in 1991/92 as well as the UEFA Super Cup in 1992 and Spanish Super Cup in 1991, 1992 and 1994. Eusebio Sacristán came in the last two years at Barcelona then rare used and 1995 opted for a move to Celta Vigo.

After two years as an established regular in Vigo midfielder came back in 1997 returned to his hometown club, Real Valladolid and completed the last 5 years of his professional career. With two defeats against Spartak Moscow Sacristán was also the last time worked on the international stage in the second round of the UEFA Cup in 1997/98. In the championship he achieved only mediocre placements with Valladolid until 2002.

With 543 Erstligaeinsätzen the midfielder played behind his former teammate Andoni Zubizarreta and Raúl in his career, the third- most games in the Primera Division.

National

Eusebio Sacristán played from 1986 to 1992 and for the Spanish national football team. He made his debut here on September 24, 1986 in a friendly match against Greece. In the big tournaments he belonged to the European Football Championship 1988 squad but did not play.

Coaching career

In 2003 Sacristán returned to FC Barcelona and was assistant coach Frank Rijkaard. Together with the team to the stars Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, Xavi and Samuel Eto'o Dutch and the Association celebrated two more championships and winning the UEFA Champions League in 2006. Starting in 2009, Eusebio was coach at his former club Celta Vigo. After a mixed season in the Spanish second division and the twelfth place in the table, he was released after one season. From the season 2011/2012 he is the new head coach of the second team of FC Barcelona in the Segunda Division. He thus succeeds Luis Enrique Martínez García.
