Faisal Husseini

Faisal Abd al -Qadir al - Husayni (Arabic فيصل عبد القادر الحسيني, DMG ʿ Abd al- Faisal al - Husaini Qādir; born July 17, 1940 in Baghdad, † 31 May 2001, Kuwait) was a Palestinian politician.

He came from the old established family in Jerusalem al - Husaini. His father Abd al -Qadir al - Husayni was, however, rejected in 1938 by the British from Palestine and took refuge in Iraq. 1946 the family moved to Egypt. On April 8, 1948, the father died in the Battle of Qastal in Jerusalem against Palmach troops.

Faisal grew up as an orphan and studied in Cairo, Baghdad and Damascus. He was a founding member of the General Union of Palestinian Students ( GUPS ) in 1959.

In 1979 he founded the Orient House in East Jerusalem, the Arab Studies Society, who collected, among other data on the population development of the Palestinians.

During the first intifada, he was the most important organizer of why he was imprisoned by the Israeli authorities repeatedly.

At the Madrid Conference in October 1991, was al - Husaini the highest representative of the Palestinian side because Israel did not want to negotiate directly with official PLO representatives.

After the introduction of the Palestinian he was minister. He was the highest representative of the PLO in Jerusalem and was regarded as a secret mayor of East Jerusalem. His diplomatic receptions and events in the Orient House the Israeli government were a thorn in the side because they saw being undermined by Israeli sovereignty over the entire city of Jerusalem. The Orient House was therefore always closed because of " prohibited activities ".

Faisal died of a heart attack in a trip abroad in Kuwait, where he wanted to improve relations with Arafat destroyed by the government there.

His body was flown to Jordan and brought from there by helicopter to the Jordanian army to Ramallah. His funeral procession led by the Muqata to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The Israeli army did not impede procession from the West Bank, leaving the participants at the border pass without inspection. Arafat still did not dare to attend.

His successor as PLO representative Sari Nusseibeh was Jerusalem.
