Faisalabad

Faisalabad, formerly Lyallpur, is the third largest city of Pakistan. Its population is estimated at about 2 million people. The city, which lies west of Lahore in Punjab province, is a major industrial center and a transportation hub. Mainly one encounters textile factories. Also, one of the largest rice mills ( IQBAL RICE MILLS ) of the country is located nearby.

History

Faisalabad was established in 1880 by the British. Originally the town was named Lyallpur, named after its founder, Sir Charles James Lyall. Before the British established at this point a city, the region was a collection of several villages. As a result, several canals were built to irrigate the territory. People from other parts of the country were brought in with promises of land in the city. Faisalabad grew up this way quickly to a big city.

In 1977, the city in honor of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, who had been murdered was renamed to Faisalabad.

Geographical Location

The district Faisalabad is located between 30 ° 35 'and 31 ° 47 ' north latitude and 72 ° 01 ' and 73 ° 40' east longitude. Climate

The climate of Faisalabad is very hot in summer, whereas in winter the temperature can drop below zero. The winter, which begins in November and lasts until March, has a temperature of between six and 21 degrees. The coldest months are December, January and February.

Education

In Faisalabad are the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, an agricultural college, and the Agricultural Research Institute (Agricultural Research Institute). Furthermore, there are several universities and colleges as a medical college ( Punjab Medical College ), Hamadard University Faisalabad Campus, University of Faisalabad, Commerce College, National Textile University, Poly Technical College, Superior Science College etc.

Economy

After the independence of Pakistan especially the textile industry has developed strongly in Faisalabad. The textiles are partly manufactured in industrial enterprises, but also in thousands of family farms. In addition to the textile industry, the chemical industry, the manufacture of food, pharmaceutical products and printing products is significant.

The soil in the area around Faisalabad is very fertile. Thanks to the irrigation system, it is one of the areas with the highest agricultural productivity. Crops are wheat and cotton.

Recently, Faisalabad is connected with the metropolis of Lahore by a newly built highway.

Religion

The largest Islamic movement in Faisalabad is the ultra-orthodox Ahl -i hadith, a South Asian version of the Arab Salafism. Unlike in most other parts of the Punjab, in which prevail the Deobandi or Barelvi movements, Faisalabad is one among only a few exceptions.

Faisalabad is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Faisalabad.
