Famciclovir is an analogue of the nucleic base and 2 -aminopurine is used as an antiviral agent against herpes viruses mainly.
Chemistry
Famciclovir is the diacetyl derivative of penciclovir after oral administration which could not achieve sufficient bioavailability. This made the development of a substance required with better pharmacokinetics.
Pharmacology
Famciclovir is a prodrug of penciclovir which is metabolized after oral administration and is converted to penciclovir by deacetylation and subsequent oxidation.
Application
The active ingredient is used as Rezidivanz for the treatment of genital herpes and for early treatment of acute herpes zoster ( " shingles "). In combination with lamivudine Famciclovir is also used in chronic hepatitis B infection.
