Family Business ( Alternative title in German speaking countries: Respectable crooks ) is an American criminal comedy from 1989 was directed by Sidney Lumet, wrote the screenplay based on the novel 's Vincent Patrick. . The main roles were played by Sean Connery, Dustin Hoffman and Matthew Broderick.
Action
Vito McMullen previously accompanied his father on several occasions previously convicted Jessie in some burglaries, then he broke up with him. He now runs a small butcher's business. His 23- year-old son Adam has canceled his studies nearing completion.
Adam persuades Jessie and Vito to break into a high-tech company's premises to steal valuable genetic material and a lab book. When burglary at first everything goes well, they can overpower a guard and find the desired test tubes. When they notice when leaving the building, that they have forgotten the lab book, Adam goes back to fetch it. However, it did trigger an alarm so that the police are alerted and arrested him. However, he can throw the lab book before.
As it turns out, that Adam may be going to prison for 15 years, wants to Vito that even he and Jessie make and pass the loot, but Jessie is not convincing. As Vito tells his wife about it, this threatens with a display, if it does not arise even to relieve Adam.
Jessie finds out that the principal of the collapse was one of the researchers, who wanted to cover up by the disappearance of the samples, the failure of attempts to gain time so again.
Finally, Vito is and Jessie is arrested then. At trial, Adam is sentenced to 3, Vito to 5 years probation, Adams grandfather Jessie was sentenced to 15 10 years. He had not published the prey and blackmailed the principal of the company, and as for Adam enables a lenient sentence.
Jessie died after about a year in prison. Slowly Adam and Vito find together again. Towards the end of the film Adam asks his father what he made the most fun in recent years. Vito admits that this was the burglary.
Reviews
Roger Ebert thought in the Chicago Sun - Times of 15 December 1989, if the film was more of a thriller or a family drama. He praised the main character but found the ending disappointing.
