Father Brown

Father Brown ( German: "father", a literal translation from English, the original Father Brown ) is a fictional character that was invented by GK Chesterton.

The in German-speaking conventionally known especially through the films with Heinz Rühmann, use of the term " Father " is actually wrong, as this is the standard for regular priests salutation. Brown, however, is a secular priest, would be the correct official salutation in German " Reverend ". In the English-speaking world, however, is not so strictly differentiated, and secular priests are addressed as " Father".

Characteristic of the figure

Father Brown is an English Catholic priest who solves crimes as a hobby. He achieves this by she identified with the perpetrators, while the crime commits himself, as he says. But He is less interested extradite criminals of earthly justice, but he will lead them to God; a voluntary confession of the perpetrator is enough for him. It does not matter to him what office held this person.

It is difficult to derive from Chesterton's stories, a detailed description and biography of Father Brown. His first name starts with a " J" (The Eye of Apollo ); he is described as small and stocky, with a large head. " His hat surrounded his round face like a halo. " ( In: The Mirror of the judge ). His eyes are gray ( Hammer of God). Father Brown has few relatives: a sister and a niece, Elizabeth " Betty " Fane ( The worst crime in the world). He grew up in Essex ( The Village Vampire) and studied in Oxford at the ( fictional) Mandeville College ( The Crime of Communists ). As a chaplain, he worked for a time in a prison in Chicago ( The machine error). Apparently, Brown has held several pastorates in the course of time, be mentioned:

  • The parish " Cobhole " in Essex ( The God of the Gongs, etc.)

  • The small village of " Bohun Beacon " ( The Hammer of God)
  • Scarborough ( The Absence of Mr. Glass)

He was also active as a missionary in South America ( The Resurrection of Father Brown ).

Most of the stories take place in England, but some in other countries:

  • USA ( The error of the machine, the arrow from the sky)
  • Not a particular country on the northern coast of South America ( The Resurrection of Father Brown )
  • France ( The Hidden Garden, The Duel of Dr. Hirsch)
  • Italy ( The Paradise of Thieves )
  • Mexico ( Father Brown scandal )
  • Germany ( in "Holy Waldstein " in The Tale of Father Brown / Father Brown tales ).

Brown's only friend is a former thief trick Hercule Flambeau ( The wrong shape ), which, converted by Brown, is the private investigator and eventually sets ( Father Brown Mystery ) to rest in a castle in Spain. Flambeau real name is Duroc.

Incidentally, there is a real role model for Father Brown: Father John O'Connor of St. Custherberts, Bradford. He was the pastor, who led Chesterton's conversion to the Catholic faith; Chesterton honored him with Volume 4 of his stories ( The Secret of Father Brown ). Further criminal skills O'Connors, however, are not known.
