Fauglia

Fauglia is a municipality of the Province of Pisa in the Tuscany region of Italy with 3627 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography

The place is located in the hills about 20 km south of Pisa and 25 km east of Livorno, close to the Via Emilia and Via Tosco - Romagna, on the western side of the river Era. Districts are Valtriano, Luciana and Acciaiolo. The neighboring municipalities are Collesalvetti Crespina Lorenzana and Orciano Pisano.

History

Most likely, the name comes from the Latin of the place faba ( bean), which was Favul ( l) ia Castrum to Fauglia.

Since antiquity, the area is used for agriculture. The first settlements on the territory of the municipality during the Middle Ages. The place is mentioned in sources of the 12th century, the church of San Lorenzo and a castle are mentioned. After belonging to the sphere of influence of Pisa Republic of the place came from 1345 for about half a century under the rule of the Count Gabriello Gherardesca, who had stirred up the people against the Pisan domination. Beginning of the 15th century came Fauglia after a long siege under Florentine rule. After a revolt in 1431, the Florentines destroyed the attachment structures of Fauglia, including the old castle. The rule of the Medici Grand Dukes owes the place to construct several elegant palaces.

Fauglia was, as well as the neighboring communities, in an earthquake in 1846 severely damaged.

Economy

The area around Fauglia is particularly fertile and rich in water, and therefore the place has always been an agricultural center. Today it the wine is still significant, however, a majority of the population works in other fields of industry, trade, especially woodworking and textiles, as well as in tourism.

Culture and sights

The site of Fauglia is dominated by buildings from the period between the 17th and 19th centuries, including some elegant villas, such as Villa Trovarsi in which the actresses Marta Abba Abba lived and Cele. More villas Villa Negri, Arnia Villa and Villa Rosselmini in Luciana.

The Town Hall ( Palazzo del Comune ) in the classical style dates from 1875. Theatre of Fauglia was built in the mid 19th century.

Churches

  • Chiesa di San Lorenzo An old parish church is attested from 1251. After the collapse in the earthquake of 1846, the ruin was abandoned and rebuilt in 1864 elsewhere. It has a simple facade in classical style. The steeple of the old church (17th century) has been preserved.
  • Chiesa di Santa Lucia - The Church in the district of Luciana was built in 1740 as an extension of a building mentioned from 1227. In the earthquake of 1846, the church was heavily damaged and restored in 1856.
