Province

Faizabad (also Feyzabad, Fayz Abad in Persian فیضآباد, DMG fayz - Ābād ) is the capital of the province of Badakhshan is (pronounced: Badakhshan ). Faizabad is located centrally in the northern half of belonging to the Afghan heartland part of the province of Badakhshan.

Geography

Faizabad is located at an altitude of about 1200 m; the mountains of the area are of a height of up to 2,000 meters approximately 800 meters higher. The river flows through Kookcha and divides the urban area; north of the river from the Old Town, the New Town to the south.

History

Badakhshan, which once belonged to the Hellenistic kingdom of Bactria / Bactria, 1657 was an Uzbek, independent principality. 1822-1859 it was Kunduz tributary, then it was part of Afghanistan, and it remained, except for a few interruptions. The limits of this province have been established in the Anglo - Russian Agreement of 1873. 1895 the river Panj was set as part of the border between the Afghan and Russian Badakhshan.

After the invasion of the Russians Faizabad in 1980 occupied by Soviet troops and Soviet garrison town.

During the civil wars after the departure of the Russians Faizabad was from 1996 to 2001 the seat of government of the internationally recognized Rabbani government, after their escape from the Taliban out of Kabul. The region around Faizabad was never occupied by the Taliban.

Since the summer of 2004 as part of the International Security Assistance Force ISAF PRT in Faizabad ( Provincial Reconstruction Team ) by the German Federal Armed Forces operated. The management of the PRTs was handed over to the end of 2011 to the Afghan authorities.

Ethnicities and religions

Predominant ethnic Tajiks and Uzbeks are. There are also a few Pashtuns and Turkmen.

Religion is Islam, to faiths are mostly Sunnis, but also represented Shiites and Ismailis. The predominant language is Dari ( Persian).

Economy

Despite its rich mineral deposits, the Badakhshan Province of Afghanistan is the poorest with an average life expectancy of 47 years. Only with regard to poppy cultivation it occupies the first place. Here are the world's largest deposits of semi-precious stone lapis lazuli, which is mined for 3,000 years. In addition, here are mines where rubies, emeralds, amethysts and gold be encouraged. In the mountains to hunt mountain goats and the famous Pamir argali (Marco Polo wild sheep ). In addition, agriculture and livestock breeding (sheep, goats, horses) operated and traditional poppy and cannabis are grown.

Traffic

From Faizabad performs an important road west to Kunduz. About the Chenar -e- Gonjeshkan Pass (1600 m) it is the main access to the rest of Afghanistan represents the drive to Kunduz ( about Talokhan ) lasts 260 km route at least 12 hours, weather conditions, the route is not temporarily impassable. To the east, the road continues in the Wakhan corridor towards People's Republic of China. Meanwhile ( mid-2010 ) is a new, continuously paved road almost completed, so that the travel time is reduced to about one-third ( about 4 - 4 1 /2 hours)

It is since 2010 no commercial air traffic to and from Faizabad more. The former " International Airport " west of the city is serviced regularly three times a week of aircraft of the UN. In addition, there are irregular flights with aircraft of aid agencies and the military.

Main roads in the city are a road on the south and the north bank of the river, which can be also used by trucks bypassing the city center, respectively. The city itself is only partially accessible with jeeps. A transition of the Kookcha is possible at a total of three points.

The national bus company Millie bus (translated " Volksbus ") operates a bus loop line, the old and new together. Transportation hub is the central market square at police headquarters, where there are also taxi ranks.
