Federal prince
The German Federal princes were the 1871 sovereign ruler of those German states that formed from there to the German Reich. The treaty of alliance between these princes governed the political and constitutional situation in the state, conceived as a new empire. Under the title of German Emperor, the King of Prussia was determined as the sovereign of the politically powerful member state to its head. The well -considered title Emperor of Germany was avoided in order to avoid conflict with Austria -Hungary and the impression of large German ambitions ( to the adjacent German settlements in the Habsburg Empire ).
The following are the princes of the states ruled by a monarchy of the German Reich are listed. It does not include the heads of the German Reich belonging, independent city states of Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck as well as the governor of the 1871 ceded by France Alsace -Lorraine, which had received a special status as an imperial country.
