The Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro ( UFRJ abbreviated, German: Federal University of Rio de Janeiro ) is the largest federal university in Brazil and one of the Brazilian centers of excellence in teaching and research. It is one of the best institutions in Latin America.
Location
It is located in a university town, the Cidade Universitaria da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, its main campus on the artificial island of Ilha do Fundão in the Guanabara Bay.
History
As the first official institution of higher education in Brazil, they can boast an uninterrupted activity since 1792, when the Real Academia de Artilharia, Fortificação e Desenho (Royal Academy of artillery, fortification and design ) was founded. From this military engineering school, finally emerging university.
As the first national university in the country it was founded in 1920 as the Universidade do Rio de Janeiro, in 1935 renamed the Universidade do Distrito Federal and served as a model for all other university start-ups.
In addition to basic and advanced studies, the university comprises seven museums, especially the Museu Nacional da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, eight university hospitals, hundreds of laboratories and more than 40 libraries.
Current Rector is Antônio Carlos Levi da Conceição.
