Ferdinand Wesely

Ferdinand " Ferdl " Wesely (* May 30, 1897, † March 19, 1949 ) was an Austrian football player. The left winger won with Rapid as captain in 1930 Mitropa Cup and played almost a decade in the attack of the Austrian national team.

Career

Ferdl Wesely is described as a smaller, faster player who, however, was known in particular for his powerful free kicks. The Left Wing began his career at Rennweger SV and moved in 1920 to the then leading Austrian football club Rapid. Ferdl Wesely soon developed into one of the pillars of the green - white attack in 1921 and 1923 already champions and played regularly since 1922 under Hugo Meisl in the national team. In the team, he excelled especially in games against arch-rivals Hungary, against whom he scored a total of 8 of his 17 international goals.

After 3-0 final win in OFB Cup against Austria Vienna took Ferdl Wesley with Rapid first time in the Mitropa Cup in 1927 in part. The club reached the final, but failed 2:6 and 2:1 at Sparta Prague. Also failed in the Mitropa Cup in 1928 Ferdinand Wesely, who scored two final goals, with Rapid until the endgame 1:7 and 5:3 at Ferencvaros. The Left Wing took over this year, the captain loop of Leopold Nitsch and led his club for another two league titles and the 1930 Mitropa Cup once again in the final, where rapid turn Sparta faced. The revenge succeeded Rapid won 2-0 and 2:3 and thus reached the greatest international success of the club's history.

After this triumph, he moved Ferdl Wesely to Switzerland, first to FC St. Gallen and then to FC Basel where he met with coach Karl Kurz and strike partner Otto Haftl two former players colleagues from Vienna. In 1933 he won the people of Basel in the Swiss Cup final 4-3 against Grasshopper Club Zurich, decide the goal scored Haftl. After two years in the smaller town club FC Basel Ferdl Wesely North Star was also some time to Belgium, where he worked as a coach at Beerschot Antwerp. After the end of World War II Ferdl Wesely returned to Vienna and joined the SC Red Star Vienna, before he died of a heart attack on 19 March 1949.
