FIDE Grand Prix 2012–13

The FIDE Grand Prix 2012-2013 was a series of chess tournaments with the participation of world leaders, which took place from September 2012 to October 2013. The top two finishers, Vesselin Topalov and Şəhriyar Məmmədyarov, thus qualified for the Candidates Tournament for the World Chess Championship 2014.

Mode

The Grand Prix consisted of six tournaments with 12 players. Regular participated in the world's top 18 players, each should play in four tournaments. Due to various cancellations occurred at five other players. The winner of each tournament received 170 points, the second 140 and the third 110 for the 4th to 12th place, there were 90, 80, ... to 10 points. For placement in every tournament included only the board points; there was no fine classification. If players shared a placement, the total points were divided. For each player, the three best tournaments counted; the fourth was one result, which was used only in the case of equality of points for rank determination.

Qualification

As participants were defined:

  • The loser of the World Chess Championship 2012: Boris Gelfand
  • The four winners of the World Cup 2011: Peter Svidler, Alexander Grishchuk, Vasyl Ivanchuk, Ruslan Ponomariov
  • Six other players due to the FIDE rating list: Sergei Karjakin, Vesselin Topalov, Hikaru Nakamura, Vüqar Həşimov, Teymur Rəcəbov, Şəhriyar Məmmədyarov. Prior to his first tournament participation Vüqar Həşimov resigned for health reasons of competition; for him Gata Kamsky was nominated.
  • One of the FIDE President nominees: Fabiano Caruana
  • Six of the marketing company AGON Nominees: Leinier Domínguez, Anish Giri, Rustam Kasimjanov, Péter Lékó, Alexander Morozevich, Wang Hao
