FIFA World Player of the Year

The World Player of the Year was a conferred annually since 1991 by the world football governing body FIFA Award for the most outstanding player, and since 2001 for the outstanding player of the calendar year. In 2010 the award with the Ballon d'Or was ( unofficially European Footballer of the Year) together under the title of FIFA Ballon d'Or.

History

The award was established in 1991 for the first time officially awarded by FIFA in Zurich. Even before the world's best player was honored by the football magazine World Soccer annually since 1982. Therefore, partially this title holders are referred to as unofficial world footballer of the year. This honor was, however, independently of FIFA, and was further awarded after 1991. As of 2001, the FIFA World Player was honored.

A title of honor got 1999 Pelé, who was chosen by the FIFA World Player of the (20th) century.

Assignment mode

The winner was determined by a vote among the coaches and captains of national teams in the world. Each of these named the three best footballers in their opinion, none of the three could come from their own country. One response to square one brought five points, second place three points, third place a point. Then the points were summed.

Statistics and Frequencies

It only player elected to the World Player of the División at the time of the election either in the Italian Serie A, Spanish Primera or the English Premier League were active. The price is comparable with the award for European Footballer of the Year, which is elected by European sports journalists and in which all footballers playing in Europe are eligible. During the years of World Cup Soccer Championships, a player of the World Cup team was always voted World Player, the first exception in 2010 was Lionel Messi in the new FIFA Ballon d'Or - choice dar.

Most frequently (three times ), the Brazilian Ronaldo were (1996, 1997, 2002 ) and Frenchman Zinedine Zidane ( 1998, 2000, 2003) excellent.
