Findlay is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Hancock County. The population at the last census in 2000 was 38 967 people. Findlay is home to the University of Findlay. Findlay is one of only two cities in Hancock County, along with Fostoria.

Geography

Findlay is located in northwestern Ohio approximately 50 miles (80 km) south of Toledo. In the town of Lye Creek and Eagle Creek empty into the Blanchard River. Several times, the town was hit by a flood of the waters in flood.

History

In the war of 1812 here by Colonel James Findlay, a military outpost was built. The resulting later for the post around settlement got its name in honor of that officer. On July 3, 1821 filed three citizens of Ohio, Joseph Vance of Urbana, William Neill of Columbus and Elnathan Cory of New Carlisle one plans to found a community. 1887 this church became the City.

During the 1880s Findlay became the center of the oil and natural gas production in the area. However, at the beginning of the 20th century, the oil reserves began to dry up. The completion of Interstate 75 in the 1960s brought a further population growth for the city.

As of November 1, 1960 Findlay was three months, the first and only city in the world, already tone dialing ( touch tone ) supported their phones instead of pulse dialing.

  • James Purdy (1914-2009), novelist, short story writer of short stories and playwright; came at the age of 5 years after Findlay and graduated from high school here
