The flag of Madagascar was officially launched on 21 October 1958.

Importance

In the modern interpretation symbolizes purity white, red represents the sovereignty and green stands for hope.

History

The flag of Madagascar based on the red and white colors of the Hova kingdom. These colors probably are originally from Southeast Asia, as they can still be seen today in the Indonesian flag. The Green has been added for coastal communities. Historically, the red stands for the princely family Volamena, the white for the princely family Volafotsy. The current flag was selected following a competition.
