The flag of Nigeria was officially launched on 1 October 1960.
Colors
History
In order to create a national flag, a commission was set up, chaired by the Minister of the Interior in 1958, the guidelines for a flag issued, which should be quite simple.
The flag became the first place in a competition to the 2,870 proposals were submitted, out.
The design came from the local engineering student Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi of Ibadan, who was impressed during a flight over his green home country. He received a bonus of £ 100 for the design.
Originally Akinkunmi had proposed a red disc in the center, but this was removed by the selection committee again.
The colors have the following meaning:
- Green stands for agriculture, the economic backbone of the country.
- White represents peace and unity.
