Flag of Shetland

The flag of Shetland was designed in 1969 by Roy Grönneberg and Bill Adams. It was created unofficially, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the transition of this archipelago of Norway to Scotland.

It uses the same colors as the flag of Scotland, in the form of the Scandinavian Cross of the North. This is to symbolize the interconnectedness Shetlands both Norway as well as with Scotland.

The flag is often used in private by the residents of Shetland, both on land and on sea. At the beginning of 2005, it was the Court of the Lord Lyon, the Scottish Heraldry authority recognized.

The Shetland flag is practically identical with the former unofficial flag of Iceland, the Hvitblainn that was used from about 1890 until the First World War by Icelandic nationalists.
