FlightGear

FlightGear is an open- source project with the goal of creating a free, extensible and realistic flight simulator.

Development

The idea of the FlightGear project grew out of dissatisfaction with the present-day commercial flight simulators such as Microsoft Flight Simulator. These were restricted to the FlightGear developers and not sufficiently extensible, since not stand for it as proprietary software source code available or the license of these flight simulators allowed no major changes or impossible.

FlightGear is a free software released under the GNU General Public License. It is constantly evolving from a variety of distributed developers across the globe, volunteers and interested people. As embedded scripting language FlightGear Nasal used, which parts of the GUI, flight characteristics and flight instruments can be controlled. There are several flight dynamics models such as JSBSim and YASim available, which are used to simulate the flight characteristics of missiles.

FlightGear provides celestial bodies like the sun, the moon and the stars and planets in strict accordance with the time and date - and of course depending on the position - Represents the also applies to the seasons, so that it is north of the Arctic Circle 24 hours light in the summer. Also, is illuminated by the sun, the moon correctly placed as in reality, so that you can see the moon as a full, half or new moon, depending on the date, time and place.

Additional software for FlightGear

Apart from the actual flight simulator FlightGear is available for further programs and projects such as

  • Atlas - tracking a flight in FlightGear on map ( real- time) or presentation of the FlightGear scenery as a 2D map on the computer screen
  • FlightGear Flight Planner - Plan of flights
  • FlightGear Scenery Designer - change and edit the FlightGear scenery data
  • Taxidraw - Preparation of accurate taxiway routes
  • TerraGear - Creation of the FlightGear scenery from SRTM elevation data and vector data, such as the VMap

For the creation of 3D models such as airplanes and buildings conventional 3D modeling tools can be used.

FlightGear derived products

The commercial flight simulator FlightProSim is almost entirely based on FlightGear version 1.9.1. Apart from the altered name and the fact that a price is charged for this product, the developers of FlightGear have found no differences between FlightGear 1.9.1 and FlightProSim. Neither have the provider of FlightProSim contributed to the FlightGear open source project, nor have paid the developers of FlightGear money for the use of the product. It is a legal process under the GNU GPL v2 license. The developers of FlightGear remain in this license because the free use of the basic idea of open source project belongs.
