The flugelhorn is the soprano instrument of the brass family of bugles. Their dimensions and mood, it is the trumpet comparable, but it has an exception to this a predominantly conical tube, a wide scale and a mouthpiece with a deep kettle. It is recorded in B (rare in C).

Origins and history

The flugelhorn has its origin in the horn. It was about the same time equipped with the trumpet with valves (first slip. Royal Bavarian privilege for a " chromatic Flügelhorn " for Michael Saurle Elder Munich 1832). Before that there was the 1810, invented by Joseph Halliday bugle. Already in the 18th century called " flugelhorn " the instrument of the master wing, which had the function with its signals to coordinate the various wings of a hunting party. At the same time, it was probably used in the march company of the military as a signaling instrument. This led then also for use in military and marching bands, where it was placed on the left wing before the bass wing horns ( baritones ). Together with the alto, tenor and baritone horn, the instrument in military orchestras provides more sound width. Today, it is used both in the band as lead melody instrument, as well as in jazz (solo and big band) and sporadically in art music (eg, Igor Stravinsky and Ralph Vaughan Williams). The flugelhorn has also been used for the chamber music of the 19th century.

Special

The conical scale, it is more difficult than for the trumpet to install a tuning slide, this is therefore usually replaced by a sliding, fixed with a clamp tuning tube directly after the mouthpiece. The sound of the flugelhorn is softer than that of the trumpet. A distinction is made between the ( trivial designated ) jazz flugelhorn with Périnet valves and the flugelhorn in German design with rotary valves (also called concert flugelhorn ), which is mainly used for traditional brass band. Concert grand horns are available in Czech ( baggy) and Moravian (slightly closer ) scale length, some of which are played with trumpet mouthpiece, which has a sharper sound result. The so-called Kuhlo flugelhorn is almost wound circular, has a very short wide mouth tube is relatively narrow mensuriert and equipped with a tuning slide.

Structural differences are there in flugelhorns in the mouthpiece shank leadpipe area:

  • The American mouthpiece shank is very tight, the following leadpipe as well.
  • The German mouthpiece shank is medium wide and the mouth pipe on.
  • The flugelhorn mouthpiece with a trumpet shank is wide, the mouth tube accordingly and not tapered.

The bell diameter vary 130-170 mm.
