Fontevraud-l'Abbaye

Fontevraud L'Abbaye is a commune in the department of Maine -et -Loire in the Pays de la Loire in the arrondissement of Saumur and Saumur in the Canton -Sud.

General

The municipality covers 14.86 square kilometers at 37-114 m above sea level and has 1550 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park Loire -Anjou- Touraine.

Attractions

  • Abbaye de Fontevraud, one of the largest monastery complex in France despite destruction in the French Revolution, 1804-1963 prison since renovations.
  • Parish Church of Saint- Michel, 12th century, enlarged in the 15th and 17th centuries; nave, chancel with Angevin vaults, richly decorated with ornamental sculptures; Altars in the abbey church; richly carved gilded tabernacle on the high altar ( 1621); numerous paintings.
  • Former cemetery Sainte-Catherine Chapel of the Convent, early 13th century; octagonal vault, which merges into a dead lantern.
