Football at the 1984 Summer Olympics

The XXIII. 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles was held a competition in football. For the first time were allowed professional players to participate in these games. Requirement was that none of these players had participated in a previous World Cup. A derogation applied for Africa and Asia.

For the first time in the history of the Olympic football tournament did not find any games in the actual Olympic Stadium in Los Angeles, but in Harvard Stadium in Cambridge, at the Navy - Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto and at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena.

With the title of France was the first time since 1948, again a Western European team Olympic champion and with Brazil since 1928 could again reach the final of a South American team. It was also the first and only time that a country in a year European champion and Olympic champion.

The more than 1.4 million viewers in the 32 games meant to Tournament London 2012 record for an Olympic football tournament. The tournament is also considered international birth of La Ola, two years before the World Cup in Mexico in 1986.

Qualification

In Europe, there were four qualifying groups. The winners of the qualifying groups 1-3 qualified directly for the Olympic Games. The six teams were initially divided into two subgroups, the two group winners determined, in home and away matches the participants. It qualified the Soviet Union, East Germany, Yugoslavia and France. Added to this was the defending Czechoslovakia.

Due to the Olympic boycott the Eastern Bloc countries, the GDR, Czechoslovakia and the USSR renounced participation. In their place, the non-qualified teams of Germany, Norway and Italy were invited.

In South America, first two sets were played with 3 teams, the two best group moved into the last group, which in turn qualified the two best teams. Participants were: Brazil and Chile. Argentina pulled his team back before the start of qualifying.

In North America, the top three teams were first determined in three rounds, which determined the two participants in a group in home and away matches. It qualified Canada and Costa Rica.

The entire African qualification was held in Cup mode. Here, Egypt, Morocco and Cameroon were able to prevail.

In Asia, there were initially five qualifying groups, the two groups best qualified for the final tournament in Singapore. There, with 5 teams was played in two groups, the two group winners qualified directly for the Olympic Games, the two runners wore a play-off game. It qualified Qatar and Saudi Arabia as group winners. Iraq defeated South Korea 1-0 and qualified also for the final tournament in the USA.

The Olympic team of the DFB was able to qualify because of the Olympic boycott the Eastern Bloc countries. The coached by Erich Ribbeck team consisted of players like Andreas Brehme, Uwe Rahn, Bernd Franke (Tor ), Guido Buchwald, Rudi Bommer, Frank Mill, Dieter Bast, Dieter treasure Schneider, Bernd Wehmeyer and Peter Lux. In the first game against Morocco a victory thanks to goals from Rahn and Brehme could be achieved. The Siel against Brazil, they lost 1-0 with a goal by Augilmar Oliveira. Hosts USA retired due to a less shot from the gate towards the Egyptians. In the last game the U.S. went in the 7th minute lead, but Emad Soliman could score the equalizer for the Egyptians, who thus qualify for the quarter-finals.

Quarterfinals

The quarter-final match Germany lost significantly against Yugoslavia 5-2. Cvetković (three times), and Radanović Gračan met for Yugoslavia and Bommer and Bockfeld for Germany.
