Francesco Satolli

Francesco di Paola Cardinal Satolli ( born July 21, 1839 Marsciano near Perugia, † January 8, 1910 in Rome ) was an Italian theologian, Cardinal and the first Apostolic Delegate to the United States.

Life

He attended the seminary in Perugia and on 14 June 1862 he received the sacrament of Holy Orders. His doctorate, he took off at the Sapienza University of Rome and in 1864 he was appointed professor at the seminary of Perugia. In 1870 he became pastor in Marsciano and 1872, he went to Monte Cassino, where he remained two years.

In 1880 he followed the vocation of Pope Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the Propaganda Fide. In 1882 he became professor of the Roman Seminary, 1884 Rector of the Greek College, 1886 President of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy and on July 1, 1888 Titular Archbishop of Naupactus. The episcopal ordination took place on 10 July of the same year by the Secretary of the Congregation for the Holy Roman and universi elle Inquisition, Cardinal Raffaele Monaco La Valletta; Co-consecrators were Cardinal Angelo Bianchi, Prefect of the Congregation of Rites, and Raffaele Sirolli, Bishop of Aquino, Sora, e Pontecorvo. As a professor, he played a significant role in the development of neo-Thomism, which Leo XIII. encouraged. His lectures were always flowing and often eloquent, aroused the enthusiasm of his students for the study of Thomas Aquinas, while his writings paved the way for the spread of Thomistic literature in philosophy and theology.

Satolli came to the United States in 1889. He was a guest of the centenary of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, and gave a speech at the inauguration of the Catholic University of America in November. On his second visit he participated in the November 16, 1892 at the meeting of the archbishops in New York City and in part formulated fourteen deals with the solution of certain problems with the school, which were discussed at that time. Then he took up his residence at the Catholic University of America, where he gave lectures on the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas, Doctor of the Church.

Since 24 January 1893 to 1896, he represented the first apostolic delegate based in Washington, DC ( papal representative in a country without Nuncio ) the interests of the Holy See in the United States. On November 29, 1895 it took Leo XIII. as cardinal priest with the title of Santa Maria in Aracoeli in the College of Cardinals.

After returning to Rome in October 1896, he was on 16 December 1896 Archpriest of the Lateran Basilica, and on July 21, 1897 Prefect of the Congregation of Studies. With his appointment as Cardinal Bishop of Frascati on 22 June 1903, he rose to the highest cardinal class. His last visit to the United States was at the World's Fair in St. Louis in 1904. He died on January 8, 1910 in Rome and is buried in the cemetery Campo di Verano.
