Frank Berghuis

Frank Berghuis ( born 2 May 1967 in Four Houten ) is a former Dutch football player who once played for the national team in 1989.

Club career

Frank Berghuis, usually called by his nickname " Pico ", played as a child at AGOVV and, due to a move in the Apeldoornse Boys in Apeldoorn. At 16, the striker moved to PSV Eindhoven, where his professional career began as a 17- year-old with a single game in the 1984/85 season, in which he also scored his first league goal equal. The following season, he completed two more games for the Philips factory club. For the 1986/87 season he moved to VVV Venlo, where the Left Wing conquered a permanent place; in 27 games he scored five goals; another season in Venlo ended with a goal in 20 games with somewhat less success. After another successful season in 1991 Volendam Berghuis signed a two -year contract with Galatasaray. After the Turkish first division side the contract did not comply and Berghuis had missed the plane for a trial at Sheffield Wednesday because of a traffic jam, he remained for two more years at FC Volendam. In 1993 he moved to the Belgian Erstdivisionär SK Lommel, where he stayed for two years. In 1995 he moved back to the Netherlands. With second-division club Cambuur Leeuwarden three seasons later he was promoted to the Eredivisie. In December 2000, he finished at Cambuur due to an injury his active career. He played 232 first division matches in which he scored 53 goals; besides, he had 93 appearances in the second division with 17 goals.

National

Berghuis had already denied several youth internationals for the KNVB when he played successfully in the 1989/90 season on the left wing position at FC Volendam. In December 1989, was the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the KNVB to an international match in Rotterdam against Brazil. Because of injuries, many players of the first rank as Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard had to cancel, Bondscoach Thijs Libregts called some players in the squad who had no international match experience. In 2011 he returned to Arnhem to be working as assistant coach of the common second team of Arnhem and Apeldoorn, Jong Vitesse / AGOVV.
