Franz Altheim

Franz Altheim ( born October 6, 1898 in Frankfurt am Main, † October 17, 1976 in Münster in Westphalia ) was a German historian and philologist Classic.

Life

Altheim studied from 1916 to 1921 at the University of Frankfurt Classics and Ancient Studies, in the city where he had gone to school. He received his Ph.D. in December 1921 with Hans von Arnim with the work Composition of Aristotle's Politics. 1925 Altheim was a fellow of the Emergency Association of German Science. In 1928 his Habilitation at Walter F. Otto about Greek gods in ancient Rome. Subsequently, he was a lecturer until 1935, from 1936 Extraordinary Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Frankfurt. In the winter of 1936 he was Chair of Representatives at the Martin -Luther- University Halle- Wittenberg. He belonged to the George circle and was from 1934 to 1936 member of the SA. In 1937 he was Associate Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Halle in 1943 finally full professor.

His appointment, he also owed its cooperation with the Heinrich Himmler sponsored by the "German Ancestral Heritage ", which funded his research trips. Altheim was a member of the Ahnenerbe Society and besides Walther Wüst, Wolfram Sievers, Karl August Eckhardt and other less eminent scientists as a member of the advisory committee of the Ahnenerbe research project "Forest and tree." Sievers ' in 1939 put forward plans to establish an up -dealing with antiquity " rassekundlich - historical institute " he agreed wholeheartedly.

1945 Altheim was first starting, but soon used again. In 1948 he was in Hall Professor of Ancient History, but switched in 1950 to the Chair of Ancient History at the newly founded Free University of Berlin, where he remained until his retirement in 1964. Then Altheim moved to Münster / Westphalia. The Althistorikerin Ruth Altheim - Stiehl, which cooperated in several of his works, is his adopted daughter.

Altheim was performed after his death, as a member of the Board of Patrons of the Nouvelle Ecole. The magazine is one of the mouthpieces of the right-wing GRECE.

Services

Originally Latinist, Altheim be turned in no later than Halle becoming ancient history. He wrote an extensive number of monographs, some of which were translated into other languages. Altheim dealt primarily with the Hellenistic and Roman history, and the history of Roman religion and the history of the ancient East.
