Franz Ignaz Beck

Franz Ignaz Beck ( born February 20, 1734 in Mannheim, † December 31 1809 in Bordeaux ) was a German composer of the Mannheim school.

Life

In his hometown, he received his first musical education probably by his father, then he was probably a pupil of Johann Stamitz. After a duel, which ended with the feigned death of his duel opponent, he was forced to flee. About Venice ( and Naples? ) He was sent to France, where he first lived in Marseille for some time took over the management of the theater orchestra.

In Bordeaux he was in the early sixties of the 18th century finally a job as head of the Zurich Opera Orchestra. He remained in this position until his death in 1809.

He created primarily symphonies and overtures and one of the representatives of the so-called " Mannheim School ", which is considered both as experimental and the other as paving the way for the " classical " compositions of the 19th and 20th centuries.
