Franz Jackson

Franz R. Jackson ( born November 1, 1912 in rock Iceland (Illinois ); † 6 May, 2008 Niles (Michigan) ) was an American jazz musician ( saxophonist, clarinetist and flutist also ).

Franz Jackson was a veteran of the Chicago jazz scene of the 1930s and 1940s and worked at this time with Jelly Roll Morton, Francois Moseley and Ruben Reeves. In 1938 he was in the band of Fletcher Henderson the place of Ben Webster, and later he was one of the groups of Fats Waller ( with JC Higginbotham and Red Allen ) and played with Roy Eldridge, Earl Hines, Billy Eckstine and Louis Armstrong. In 1957 he formed his Original Jass All-Stars; 1961 made ​​recordings for Riverside Records in the series " Chicago Living Legends " with trumpeter Bob Shoffner, trombonist John Thomas, pianist Rozelle Claxton, the banjo player Lawrence Dixon, the tuba player Bill Oldham and drummer Bill Curry.

As one of the last survivors of that era, he was active until the 1990s. He founded in 1980 the jazz entertainer, in 1981 went on a European tour and played in various jazz clubs in Chicago, as in " Joe's Bebop Cafe " and " Andy's ". In 1996 he was awarded the "Jazz Master Award " by Arts Midwest.
