Franz Joseph Spiegler

Franz Joseph Spiegler ( born April 5, 1691 Wangen im Allgäu, † April 15, 1757 in Konstanz ) was a German painter of the Baroque. He was known especially for his frescoes that decorate several churches and monasteries on the Upper Swabian Baroque Road among others. His main work, the ceiling painting of Our Lady of the Abbey Zwiesel apply in Münster.

Life

Spiegler was born the son of a Landgerichtsprokurators in the free imperial city of Wangen im Allgäu. After the early death of his father in 1692 his mother, who came from Wangen old patrician family, the ( craft ) painter Adam Joseph Doll married man. So Spiegler became familiar early with the craft of painting. Around 1710 Spiegler trained as a painter at his great- uncle, the Bavarian court painter Johann Kaspar Sing, where he met the influence of Dutch painting History painting of the time in Munich. It is questionable whether it until 1723 as a painter and gilder barrel on Wolfegg Castle and the surrounding area was active from 1712. 1723-1725 frescoed Spiegler in Ottobeuren monastery under the strong influence of the Munich court formative Jacopo Amigoni. In the following years he created frescoes and oil paintings for numerous monasteries, churches and castles, particularly in Upper Swabia, Lake Constance, the Black Forest and the High Rhine. 1757 died Spiegler in Konstanz.
