Franz Werner

Franz Werner ( born August 15, 1867 in Vienna, † February 28, 1939 ) was an Austrian zoologist and explorer. Specializing in the areas of herpetology and entomology, he described different species and different taxa of frogs, snakes and insects.

Biography

Through his father he was already at an age of six years contact with reptiles and amphibians. His subsequent studies as a very good student were supported by George Albert Boulenger and Oskar Boettger. In 1890 he was awarded in Vienna with a doctorate. After a stay in Leipzig with a duration of one year, he began to teach at the Institute of Zoology at the University of Vienna. At the same institution, he was professor from 1919 to 1933.

In addition to more than 550 published research results in the field of herpetology he had his own collection. He named many new species of reptiles, amphibians and arthropods, the latter especially Orthoptera and scorpions.

In 1931 he published the textbook third class of Craniata: third and last class of the Ichthyopsida: Amphibia, Anura: general introduction to the natural history of Amphibia and 1910, the reference book amphibians and reptiles.

Werner described, among others, the frog family Leptodactylidae Werner, 1896 and numerous species, including the South American Froschlurch Pristimantis appendiculatus (as Eleutherodactylus appendiculatus Werner, 1894), the Lebanese mountain viper ( Montivipera bornmuelleri, as Vipera bornmuelleri Werner, 1898), the Palestinian viper (Vipera Palaestinae Werner, 1938) and the Cyclades Viper ( Macrovipera schweizeri as Vipera lebetina Swiss Werner, 1935).
