The National Highway 5, better known as the 5 Freeway, is a freeway in Taiwan. The highway is an east -west route across the north of the island, from Taipei to Yilan on the east coast. It is the only highway in the country, leading to the east coast of Taiwan. The highway is 54 km long and has many tunnels.

Street Description

The highway begins at the eastern side of the capital Taipei on Freeway coming from Keelung and forms a southern bypass of Taipei. The highway has 2x2 lanes and runs through the mountain region in the center of the island. Most parts of the track go through tunnel. The length of the Xueshan Tunnel is 12.9 kilometers, it is expanded in two columns. It is the second longest tunnel in the world which is developed on two tracks. The highway leads to the shallow coastal region and then bends towards the south. Here the ring road of the city of Yilan starts. Further south, the highway ends at Luodong.

History

The 5 Freeway is one of the newer highways in Taiwan. Construction of the tunnel began Xueshan in July 1991 and in January 2000 the first part in Taipei was opened. On 15 December 2004 the section between Shenkeng and Pinglin opened with a series of tunnels. On 22 January 2006, the southern part between Toucheng and Dongshan was opened. On 16 June 2006, the Xueshan Tunnel, which at that time the longest tunnel in the world was 2x2 with a length of 12.9 km and is now the second longest opened. A little earlier, on 22 January 2006 opened the part between Pinglin and Toucheng and the highway was completed in its present form. The travel time between the East Coast and Taipei dropped from two hours to 40 minutes.
