Freyung is the county town of the district Freyung -Grafenau in the district of Lower Bavaria. The city is located in the Bavarian Forest, near the German -Czech border.

Geographical Location

The county town of Freyung located in the southeast of the Bavarian Forest on the banks of Saußbaches which forms the Wolfsteiner Ohe later. North of Freyung is the Bavarian Forest National Park. Freyung located 33 kilometers north of Passau, 17 km from the Czech border, 18 km from Grafenau and 27 km from the border with Austria.

History

First settlements from the 13th century on the territory of today's Freyung are known; the inhabitants settled in the vicinity of the old castle Wolfenstein, which the bishop had Wolfger built by Erla in 1200, in a village clearing down. Earlier, the Emperor Henry VI. the country in 1193 ceded to some bishops of Passau. The Freyung was not yet a place name, but referred to an area where the settlers a Freiung, that is an exemption from the tax was granted. 1301 this place was first mentioned as to Purchstol to Wolfer stone and a forest in a document.

When in 1803 the Prince-Bishopric of Passau was disbanded with the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss, Freyung initially fell to the Austrian Duchy of Salzburg and came two years later with the Peace of Pressburg to the Kingdom of Bavaria. 1811 were counted 535 inhabitants. In a devastating fire in 1872 39 of about 70 houses were destroyed.

On December 3, 1953 Freyung became a town. After the incorporation of location Freyung was from April 1, 1954 to June 30, 1972 county town of the district of Wolfenstein. Following the unification of the county with the county Grafenau, it became a district town of the district Freyung -Grafenau.

Incorporations

On 1 April 1954, the formerly independent communities Ahornöd and location were incorporated. On May 1, 1978 parts of the community Kumreut were reclassified to Freyung.
