Geographical Location

The municipality is located in the Danube- forest in southeastern Bavarian Forest. Grainet is located in a sunny valley at the foot of the 1170 meter high Haidel approximately 8 km east of Freyung, 9 kilometers north of Forest churches, each 20 kilometers away from the borders with the Czech Republic and Austria.

Neighboring communities

History

Grainet was created in 1400 as a so-called Säumerdorf (from Middle High German = Sam horses load ) on the Gold Trail, an ancient trade route between Bohemia and Bavaria, which was already in 1010 first mentioned. The salt transport from Passau to the Bohemian Prachatitz were an important source of income for the poor Bayer and Böhmerwäldler in the late Middle Ages. Grainet

The coat of arms description reads: Split of silver and green; in confused colors front a vertical asked leafy rod behind a bell.

Parish

Grainet belonged until 1750 to the parish Freyung. Four to five times a year, the Freyunger priest celebrated Mass in the old church of St. Nicholas, which was, however, become too small due to the population growth in the community.
