Friedrich Ludwig Abresch

Friedrich Ludwig Abresch ( born December 29, 1699 Homburg, † 1782 in Zwolle ) was a Dutch scholar of German origin.

Life

After visiting the reformed educational institution to Herborn Abresch studied classical philology at the University of Utrecht with Karl Andreas Duker and Arnold Drakenborch. Other than these he dealt mainly with the Greek, not Latin literature (in reference to Tiberius Hemsterhuis ). While working as a teacher at the high school to Middelburg in 1723 he became vice-principal and principal in 1725. After the death of his wife he became rector to Zwolle, the home of his second wife.

Abreschs research focused on the text form of the poet Aeschylus tragedy, of the rhetorician Aelius Aristides and Aristainetos. His conjectures on the traditional texts considered several manuscripts, but no longer meet the demands of modern textual criticism.
