Friedrich Matthias Claudius

Frederick Matthias Claudius ( born June 1, 1822 in Lübeck, † January 10, 1869 in Kiel ) was a German anatomist.

Life and work

Claudius was one of the two sons of Lübeck prosecutor and later a councilor Frederick Matthias Claudius Jacobus. His grandfather was the poet Matthias Claudius. He studied at the universities of Jena, Gottingen and Kiel. He was Doctorate 1844 in Göttingen. In the years 1848-1850 he participated as a member of the military at the Schleswig- Holstein War ( 1848-1851 ). In 1849 he was appointed to the Zoological Museum in Kiel. In Kiel he also worked as a lecturer in 1854.

In 1859, he was after the death of Franz Ludwig Fick professor at the University of Marburg, where he also took over the management of the Museum anatomicum.

Claudius had specialized in the microscopic anatomy and completed the collection of the Marburg anatomy museum with preparations on the morphology of the inner ear.

As of 1862, his health deteriorated and in 1867 he was relieved of his duties due to his.
